On March 15th, in a landmark development, the cabinet of India cleared a bill, which if passed by the parliament will allow foreign universities to establish campuses and award degrees in India. Such bills were proposed in the past but did not become a law. This bill has certain amendments and the government seems more upbeet about the prospects. It is still very early, but if it indeed becomes a law, it will revolutionize the way Indian students and students from other countries can get access to the US education system. To state that such development was highly expected would be an understatement. Georgia Tech had started the process to acquire land near Hyderabad to setup a campus as early as 2007. Columbia Universitiy has announced plans to setup a campus in Mumbai. Other top universities like Yale have welcomed the move.
The education at the US universities in India should be less expensive and of comparable standards as the us campuses. Getting into those, like anything else in India, is not going to be very easy. But will it bring down the charm of traveling to US? Not in our opinion. On he contrary, it will fuel more interest in US education. It will spur different types of industries – most certainly one whoch will ‘coach’ students for the GRE and TOEFL.
The best and brightest will still strive to go to USA. US education is not only about the degree, but experiencing the culture, exposure to the latest technology and the greatest professors. Study abroad is a life changing experience and that experience cannot be gained at a campus of US university in your own country. Students go to US for a variety of additional reasons like access to world class research, seeing another country, opportunity to earn dollars, possible immigration and so on. Still, US universities in India will offer a good alternative for those who do not get funded to study in the US or face visa related problems.
