Ask a question at www.app2us.com

In the mid nineteenth century there was a lot of gold to be found in California. You are little late for that. But still there are many reasons to apply to Universities in California!

No U.S. state can match California in the quality and number of top Universities. Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Cal Tech, Hastings College of Law are one of the top Universities. The number of Nobel Laureates in these Universities exceeds those in many countries of the world.

California has a robust and diverse economy with lots of activities in the Computers, Biotech, Healthcare and Engineering. Even when US economy is not doing too good, the California economy is strong due to the innovations that are pioneered in California. Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Disneyland are in California. California is home to some of the world’s biggest computer and software companies.

California is culturally and racially the most diverse state in the U.S. and perhaps in the world. It is amazing to note that banks and government departments offer services in Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog and Vietnamese and more. Telugu speakers can be found everywhere. Diversity is good for everyone more so for international students and new immigrants. More diversity leads to high acceptability of people from outside and better chances of getting jobs. It also means that you have a vibrant workplace where you have co workers from different cultures. For food connoisseurs, there are a variety of eating joints where you can get food from all parts of the world. California is by far the leading state in the number of international students studying in any state - 77,987 in 2006-07.

Even geographically it is an amazing place. Within 2 hours of the Silicon Valley, you can reach plains, Bays, Ocean, Deserts, Forests, Snow-clad mountains and large lakes. The weather in the most urban areas is pleasant throughout the year.

So what is the down side? The living cost is higher. But that is compensated by the numerous advantages. While Applying to US Universities be sure to include a few from California. When you have multiple admission offers, read this blog before you take a decision!

Multiple Admission Offers

Having received multiple admission offers is a very happy yet confusing situation in the process of applying to US Universities. Ideally one should be able to decide easily on the basis of academic ranking and reputation. But along with academics, fees and funding become a crucial factor in decision making. There is always a dilemma to select a better ranked University or decide in favor of a lower ranked University from where you have got an assistantship. If you have not got any funding from any University, then also there could be a significant difference in the fee.

Every situation is unique and there cannot be a thumb rule or algorithm for decision making. Academic reputation should be the main criteria, because that translates into better job prospects and a better future. After you graduate with a degree, you will carry that degree and the privileges associated with it throughout your life. Nobody cares whether you got an assistantship or were self funded. If you can manage the financial situation with the help of loans, we encourage you to go for the better degree program. Sometimes the location factor becomes significant.

You should refer to as many sources as possible, because you will live with decision forever, and this may be the most important decision in your life so far. Try to talk to some current student, send a few emails. Do not overdo it, students are busy people. If you need help, come visit our forum at www.app2us.com and we will help you take an informed decision. All services at app2us.com are free.

The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree is the degree you should seek if you are interested in becoming a practicing pharmacist in the USA. The Pharm.D. program takes four years of study. The Pharm.D. program prepares students for licensure as a pharmacist. This degree will allow you to practice pharmacy in a number of settings including in a hospital or community setting, home health care, and nursing home care. A prior bachelor’s degree is not necessary. Admission to most Pharm.D. programs is handled through a common admission process of Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS) Application. Some Universities need a supplemental University specific application.

A Ph.D. in Pharmacy degree will help you pursue a research career in either an academic or pharmaceutical industry setting. Other degrees in Pharmacy include the professional Pharm.D. degree, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the areas of Medicinal Chemistry , Pharmaceutics , Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacy Administration and Pharmacy Practice. Very few Universities, for example the Ohio State University offer a B.S. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

At Oregon State University, students can start out as pre-pharmacy majors through the College of Science, or they can apply to the Early Admission Program, which admits high school seniors or college freshmen to both the pre-pharmacy and Pharm.D. programs. If you have a three year B.Sc. degree in Biology or Chemistry, check with your target Universities, you may be eligible for admission to a Pharm.D. program.

University Selection - Importance of location

It is common and logical that students shortlist the Universities on the basis of ranking reputation and research areas. Obviously academics the main purpose of going to USA for higher education.

Students should come up with a good fit of 3 or 4 Universities where they have realistic chances of admission and aid. Then they should add 1 or 2 dream schools and 1 or 2 safety schools.Next to academics, three most important criteria in University selection are Expense, Climate, and Job scenario (in that state of USA).

For international applicants the cost of attendance is very important. Even if you are totally funded, you have to pay for your rent, food, etc which drastically varies if you are in New York or College Station.

Most of the northern states of USA experience cold winters with subzero temperatures. The picture of snow may look pretty but life becomes very difficult for those not used to that extreme weather. It adds to living cost too if you have to buy heavy winter clothing.

Looking for jobs is easier if your University is located in a state with strong economic activity related to your education. Some of the states of USA have good job opportunities and some are home to dying industries bearing the burnt of outsourcing. For example, the job scenario and acceptability of a foreign worker is high in California.

MS in Finance

Visit www.app2us.com

The MS in Finance program is offered by some of the large Business Schools. The degree is designed for students who may want to specialize in Finance but do not want to go through the hassles and expenditures of an MBA program.
The courses provide detailed knowledge of the policies, principles, and techniques involved in financial decisions made by professionals in corporations, financial institutions, securities firms, and pension fund and mutual fund organizations. The M.S. program in Finance consists of 10 to 15 courses and is more flexible than the MBA, in terms of what courses one wants to take. It may be completed in one year.
The main advantage is that you save time and money and you learn more of Finance than a typical MBA graduate. The disadvantage is that you will be considered for niche jobs and may not have the brand name recognition that of an MBA degree.
Some of the reputable MS in Finance programs, are offered by:

Private and Public Universities

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Before you finalize the target Universities to apply, it is very important to understand the difference between a public and a private University. There are both private and public Universities which are very well known and the respect for a degree is mostly determined by the academic reputation, and has nothing to do with public or private. But for your application and tuition cost, it may make a difference. The tuition cost at a private University is typically higher as compared to a similarly reputable public university. Also the application fee is higher. It must be very easy to decide then - apply to public Universities. Not exactly. Our goal is to guide you towards the best quality education at minimum cost - TO YOU. Private Universities of similar reputation and ranking pay more to research and teaching assistants. So if you are funded, you might be better off in a private Universities, assuming all other academic factors are equal.

Here are the advantages of public Universities, in terms of funding. Application fee is lower and we know that application cost itself is a big factor for international students. If you are not funded initially, lower tuition helps. Public Universities are typically large, so the chances of getting funded later are brighter. Also many public Universities have a concept of in-state-tuition.

Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and Stanford Universities are private Universities and are among the best in the world. However if you are not exactly the next Einstein and are planning to apply to low ranked Universities, then going for public Universities is a risk free option. In lower end of the spectrum a private University may not have even basic facilities or accreditation and it is difficult to find out because all Universities have awesome websites. If you are admitted to a lower ranked state University, the chances of extreme disappointment is lower and the degree is likely to carry some value compared to that of an unknown private University.

Academic quality, research interests and your admissibility should be the main criteria for University selection, but it is good to know the public private concept for a better decision-making.

How to find out: As a rule of thumb, public Universities include the name of the state. But if the name of a state comes with a “direction”, then the University is not necessarily public. Example: University of Southern California is a private University - a very reputable one.

Ivy League Universities in USA

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Ivy League is a set of eight private US Universities:

The name is derived from the ivy plants that cover many of these institutions’ old historic buildings and is symbolic of their age. Formally, Ivy League is the name of the Athletic Conference of these eight Universities http://www.ivyleaguesports.com All of Ivy League Universities are located in the

Northeastern USA. These are among the best Universities for Undergraduate education, but not all of them are at the top of the rankings for graduate school. In addition to a great academic and research facilities, the alumni networks of these Universities are among the strongest. Invariably the cost of tuition is high. If you are applying to 5 or 6 Universities, you may apply to a few of these if they offer your program of choice.  There are many top Universities like MIT, Stanford or Berkeley which are not part of Ivy League.

Analysis of US University Rankings

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

There are many University ranking systems that may confuse an applicant. If you examine closely, no University or program holds a consistent position in any rankings. However, rankings are consistent to the extent that if you look at top 10 Universities in different rankings, you will come across the same 7 or 8 Universities.

Rankings are one of many parameters that should weigh in your decision-making. For undergraduate programs University ranking is more relevant, but for graduate programs department ranking, if available, is more relevant. However rankings are not available for many fields of study.

What does a top-10 or top-20 program has to offer, which a 100th rank program may not offer? The answer is not straightforward but one should closely look at the factors taken into the ranking itself. A higher ranked graduate program is more likely to have better research credentials, more publications, higher number of professors and definitively a better branding. Better branding and a large pool of successful alumni can result in great career growth and better job opportunities both at campus and later in the career. In case of MBA programs, there is a much higher chances of higher salaries and better jobs from top ranked programs as compared to those not in Top 25 or 30.

We at app2us.com suggest you take an average of many different rankings. Ranking should be considered along with other factors like type of research, location, funding opportunities and your chances of being admitted to a particular University.

Does it make a difference if you get admitted to a 10th or 12th ranked University?  Probably not. How about the difference between 20th and 80th ranked University? You may decide that for yourself!
