Ask a question at www.app2us.com.

When students first decide to study in the US, they know very few role models from whom to draw inspiration from. app2us consistently highlights such examples – one is Dr. Sunil Mithas, B-School Professor and author of the “Digital Intelligence” book. We discussed about his book and his academic interests. He was also kind enough to share some insights from the MBA and MIS admission processes, which woould directly benefit our readers.

Dr. Mithas worked in the most admired business group of India – the Tata group for about a decade and then decided to pursue his PhD from Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. At the end of his PhD, largely due to quality research work and publications, he was a much sought after candidate for the Assistant Professor position. He is now an Associate Professor at the Smit School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park. He was identified as a 2011 MSI Young Scholar by the Marketing Science Institute. His book titled “Digital Intelligence: What Every Smart Manager Must Have for Success in an Information Age” is creating a buzz these days and we decided to interview him earlier this week for the app2us inspirational interview series.

Dr. Mithas said, “It is likely that those graduating from say top 50 programs may have higher earnings (but they also cost more) than those graduating from say lower ranked programs, but I am yet to see any definitive study documenting higher returns for those graduating from the most expensive programs. In general, rankings are very noisy measures of a school’s quality.” About the book, he says, “The 4D framework for governance of digital resources focuses attention on four salient dimensions: decision rights, dollars, department role and configuration and delivery of IT services. It is important for firms to get the configuration of these four aspects of governance right vis-a-vis a firm’s strategy. From a top management perspective, I will first start with determining dollars or overall investment levels in IT consistent with a firm’s strategy as I discuss in the book.” The complete interview is published here

According to him, the book is intended for general managers and students who want to improve their digital intelligence or digital IQ. The book espouses the belief that ITracy is an important competence that global leaders need to have in today’s economy to become more productive and informed members of the society and to enhance the performance of their organizations. The book lays out the most basic competencies and skill sets for thinking about IT and IT-enabled changes that all managers should have. The book can be purchased at Amazon.com
or Createspeace

app2us.com recommends the book for any MBA or MIS student who wants to understand the importance of IT to the success of business. It is also recommended as a casual reading for CS and CE students to better understand the real life applications of all their research. If you are a twitter user, you can follow app2us at twitter.com/app2us and Dr. Sunil Mithas at twitter.com/ITisIMP

On October 14th, Professor Pradipta Banerji joined IIT Roorkee, India as Director. app2us.com is the first media organization to carry his interview as Director. He talks at length about his plans for the future of IIT Roorkee, research at IITs and his experiences as a student in the USA. Prof Banerji has completed his MS and PhD from University of California, Berkeley. He worked at IIT Bombay from 1988 till 2011 as Professor of Civil Engineering and has been the Dean of Alumni and International Relations at IIT Bombay.

As we understand, the interview has created a lot of buzz worldwide. Here are some interesting feedback we got from some students and alumni of IIT Roorkee: Rajat Gupta, a student of B Tech Electrical Engineering 3rd year, and president of IEEE student chapter at IIT Roorkee said,”Hope he brings about some real and visible changes, as promised in the interview.” Digendra Singh Rathor, a student of B. Tech. 3rd year Mechanical Engineering, and Marketing Head of IIT Roorkee Motorsports, said, “He can transform IIT Roorkee to the IIT Roorkee of my dreams. He has the vision and potential to bring IIT Roorkee among the top 3 IITs within next couple of years.” Sharad Gupta, Industrial Engineering graduate of 1998 and currently Vice president of strategy at OCBC Bank in Singapore and Mckinsey Alumnus said, “Looks like a great choice for the Director position, I especially liked his pragmatic outlook”. Arvind Panwar who graduated in 1995 and the President of IIT Roorkee Alumni Association of Bay Area chapter said,”It is good to know the vision of Professor Banerji for IIT Roorkee, there is a lot of excitement among the alumni about his ideas and plans. We wish him great success.”

What can an applicant to US University learn from the thoughts of Professor Banerji? Professor Banerji, in his exclusive interview to app2us.com said, “Study in the USA, if you get a scholarship or can afford the high cost of education. Although the standards are showing a dip because of many years of reduced funding from state and federal sources, it is currently still the best education system in the world. Study there and imbibe the best from that system. Then return to your country and try to apply in an innovative manner some of the things that you have taken away from the US system.” The full interview is here.
Do you use a mobile phone? Ever wondered who invented it, and how would be it like hearing from him? It is a great honor for app2us.com to get the privilege to interview Mr. Martin Cooper, wireless pioneer and father of mobile phone. The interview was conducted and published on January 26th, 2011. According to Mr. Cooper, “A successful inventor has to understand the entire process even if she doesn’t manage every part of it. Second, reach out, do not fear failure. Perseverance and self confidence are requisites to the creative process.”

In response to a question, Mr. Cooper said, “…Not everyone has the talent or desire to do basic research, to have a career in academia. And it’s not necessary to travel long distances to find a superb education that fits ones needs. What’s important is matching up ones interests with the educational philosophy of the university.” For the full interview, please visit the interview page.

In response to a question, Prof. Nohria said, “…my father had a tremendous influence on me as I was growing up. I went on many business trips with him as he was starting manufacturing plants all around India. After a few years had passed, we would go back and visit these sites. The factories were doing well, jobs had been created, communities were thriving. All this came out of almost nothing originally, so I saw firsthand the extraordinary positive impact that business can have on society.” For the full interview, please visit the interview page.
He was kind enough to grant an exclusive interview to app2us.com.

Ambassador Han Duk-soo was appointed by President Lee Myung-bak as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States of the America on January 18, 2009. He presented his Letter of Credence to President Barack Obama on May 20, 2009. Before the appointment, Ambassador Han served as the 38th Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea after his nomination was approved by the National Assembly on April 2, 2007, and he worked in that capacity until February 2008.

Prior to serving as Prime Minister, Ambassador Han held numerous high-ranking positions in the Korean government. In 2006, he was named Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Facilitating KORUS FTA following his service as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy. Before being named Minister of Government Policy Coordination in early 2004, he worked as President of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade.

The success story of South Korea, as heard from His Excellency Ambassador Han is very intriguing. In reply to a question, Ambassador Han said, “One must always keep one’s mind open and be willing to participate in the local community. Studying abroad can be a richly rewarding experience for those who learn the host country’s language and try to sympathize or internalize its cultural perspectives. Students should try to think of themselves as representatives of their home countries because their interactions with host-country citizens will affect, for better or worse, those citizens’ views of the student’s home country.”

Appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama, Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer is the 21st and current U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of India. He leads one of America’s largest diplomatic missions and has principal responsibility for broadening and deepening the multi-faceted U.S.-India partnership. From New Delhi to Hyderabad, from Kolkata to Lucknow, Ambassador Roemer has enthusiastically reached out to the people of India, leading by example in strengthening the people-to-people ties that form the foundation of the expanding U.S.-India relationship.

Ambassador Roemer holds a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.A. and PhD. in American Government from the University of Notre Dame. His interests include basketball, coaching his children in sports, reading history and biographies, and collecting first edition books.

In reply to a question, Ambassador Roemer said, “Educational ties between India and the U.S. are already very strong – as I mentioned, India has over 100,000 students studying in the U.S., more than any other country. There are several current programs that keep these ties so close. These range from the recently announced Obama-Singh Higher Education Initiative to the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship Program. Both of these programs connect our colleges and improve faculty interaction. The Embassy has also sent hundreds of Indian high school students to study for a year in the U.S., and we’re bringing more and more American students to India to study Hindi.”

Speaking about the fraud prevention in the visa process, Ambassador Roemer said, “Specific to India, though, we’ve greatly improved and continue to improve consular efficiencies, significantly reducing the visa appointment backlog. We’ve ramped up consulate staffing and have invested over $100 million in India alone to update and expand our consular facilities. Last year, we opened a new Consulate General in Hyderabad and are in the process of constructing a new consulate facility for Mumbai. We’ve also enhanced fraud prevention capabilities across India to protect applicants from unscrupulous touts and vendors.”
Abhinav Bindra is the current World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air Rifle event. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games and India’s first gold medal since 1980, when the Men’s Field Hockey Team won the gold. He received the Arjuna Award at the young age of 17 and has been the youngest recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards – the highest sporting honor of India at 18 years. Abhinav has also been decorated with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honor of India, in 2009.
In reply to a question, Abhinav said, “I often laugh silently when I think back at how it all began…. A long and almost bizarre journey for a chubby fat 12 year old boy who hated all activity and sport!”. Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri is one of the leading environmental scientists of the world. He is the chairman of IPCC, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace prize with Al Gore. Dr Pachauri wears many hats – those of the Director General of TERI, the Chancellor of TERI University and the Director of Yale Climate and Energy Institute. Dr Pachauri is a prominent researcher on environmental subjects, recognised internationally for his efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

Dr Pachauri is someone who studied at US, returned to his country and gave a lot to his country and to the world. We requested an interview with him and he graciously agreed. In addition to US education, we talked about a wide range of topics including global warming, nobel peace prize and even cricket. In reply to a question, Dr Pachauri said one of the greatest strengths of the US education system is the flexibility and freedom it offers. Professor John Hennessy is one of the most renowned Computer Scientists in the world and a pioneer in the field of RISC architecture. His books on Computer Architecture, co-authored with Dr. David Patterson, are one of the most widely read textbooks. Professor Hennessy is the President of the Stanford University. It is a matter of great pride for us that Professor Hennessy decided to interview with app2us.com last month.

In response to a question, Professor Hennessy said, “Stanford’s distinguishing characteristic is its pioneering spirit and focus on research that contributes to the public good. There is no better environment for innovation. The world today is facing enormous challenges, ranging from emerging infectious diseases that become global threats to the impact of climate change on our planet’s ecosystems, from threats of terrorism to the persistence of poverty. At Stanford, we believe we can help address these problems, both through groundbreaking research and through the education of the next generation of world leaders. For students who are interested in taking on the big challenges and making a difference, we hope you will consider applying to Stanford. We think you will find the university a place that will nurture your dreams and help you achieve your goals.” For the full interview, please visit the interview page.
On September 2, 1969, in a lab at UCLA, data was transferred over a 15 foot cable connection between the two machines. This was the start of the internet.

Since app2us.com would not exist without the Internet, we decided to celebrate the occasion by interviewing the father of the Internet, UCLA Professor Leonard Kleinrock, who started it all. We are very fortunate that Professor Kleinrock agreed to interview with us, and share his memories from that day, 40 years ago. The interview focused on Internet, his research, and of course our favorite subject – US universities.

In response to a question, Professor Kleinrock said, “I am currently working on a number of exciting research problems. They include: nomadic and mobile computing; peer-to-peer networks; intelligent agents; smart search engines; distributed sensor networks and smart spaces; distributed spheres of influence; and more.” For the full interview, please visit the interview page .
