Most of incoming students are not funded from the beginning, and they need to look for student worker jobs to support themselves. In addition to money, these jobs can help gain some valuable experience and open some doors for possible assistantship at the same place. Here are some tips that will help in the search.

Preparation: Learn computer skills and Learn typing.

Resume: Make a one page resume. Your contact details including your email and phone number should be at the top. Carry 20 copies of your resume everyday, everywhere you go.

Ego: Welcome to America and leave your ego behind. Student worker jobs may include not so cool responsibilities like washing dishes, cleaning. Such tasks and those who do those are treated with dignity, so be mentally prepared to do any task.

Never give up: If you really need a student job, keep on looking. No amount of time spent looking for a job is too much. Often time those who get jobs are those who keep on looking, not those who are the smartest.

Speak American English: There is no need to develop a fake accent or pretend to be someone else, but it really helps if you not use the words and lingo of British English, which may mean something else in US English and culture. If you speak “Z” as “Zed” people will think you are from another planet. In USA “Z” is “Zee” Read this.

Speak slowly: People from different cultures have better chance of understanding if you speak slowly. Americans do speak very slowly compared to many other parts of the world, and they appreciate when you speak slowly to them.

Dress code: The dress code on campus is very informal. However when you are looking for or doing a student job, make yourself presentable, and always wear shoes – of any kind. The university T-Shirt is always a good idea for fitting in.

Interview: While facing an interview for a campus job (yes, even for most mundane ones) you need to appear very interested and excited about the job. This criteria is very important for Americans. If you do not show interest and enthusiasm, you cannot get any job in USA, from that of a janitor to CEO.

Avoid Dead Fish handshake: Americans shake hands very firmly, looking in the eyes. Most international students shake hands like their hand was a dead fish and they look….you guessed it, towards the floor. A firm handshake is very important in the USA, and extremely important in a job search scenario.

On campus only: Look for a part time job within the University only. Working outside university is a crime.

This post is about looking for a part time job to support your studies. However many of above points are equally valid for the full-time job search.

Money follows research

A key attraction of US universities is that in addition to quality education and research, plenty of funding opportunities exist. Most of the applicants including the users of app2us.com are very much interested in getting funded. While there is no magic wand for funding, it helps to understand the root cause and the reasons behind the existence of funding. Lets start with a trivia quiz:

Q. US Universities provide funding opportunities to local and international students because:

(a) America is a rich country and universities have a lot of money
(b) They want to help bright students from different countries
(c) The funding helps increase the research output and in turn helps enhance the reputation of the universities
(d) Funding helps attract the best and brightest students

d is a good answer, a and b are correct to a very limited extent, but c is the best answer.

It is important to understand the following facts about the funding:

1. Funding is available to further the cause of the university, student welfare is a good side-effect of that.
2. The keyword is research output. Funding exists where research is done (MS/PhD). Funding is very limited for non-research degree programs (MBA, M Engg, MCS).
3. The criteria of funding is the same as admissions – but more stringent.
4. All US Universities offer TA RA and Fellowships.
5. All US Universities offer admissions with and without funding.
6. Higher ranked universities do more research and more research is the primary cause of their high ranking.
7. At top universities professors are judged, evaluated and promoted based on their research output, with very little emphasis on the quality of their teaching.
8. The best and the brightest are offered fellowships – they typically get paid more than TA or RA salary. The idea is to let the best students focus on research and not be burdened by a 20 hour responsibility.
9. While GRE score does not play a crucial role, but there are minimum standards of English prescribed for TA positions. This can be enforced by a higher minimum requirement at the TOEFL and the TSE or a university specific test of spoken English.

Here is what you should understand:

1. Your statement of purpose should focus on one thing – your planned research and past activities to support the plan.
2. A career goal in research is more coherent for funding rather than a goal of teaching
3. Opt for research based degrees and the research/thesis option as against non-thesis(project option)
4. A degree exactly named MS (Master of Science) is most likely a research based degree. Other variations like MCS (Master of Computer Science) M Engg (Master of Engineering)
5. Some universities have policies that prevent MBA students take up assistantship positions in other departments, whereas a non funded MS student is free to do so.

Now the key question: Who gets funded?

1. Students with exceptional academic record AMONG those who get admitted.
2. Students who have prior research and publications.
3. Students who demonstrate a potential and desire for research that matches the goals of the program.
4. Students who are good enough to get admitted to, say, 10th ranked program are likely to get funded at the 25th ranked program.

app2us key to funding:

1. Study and improve your marks CGPA and class rank.
2. Participate in research as early as possible and try to publish your work at a reputable journal, else at an ordinary conference.
3. Have a genuine interest in research. If you have no interest in research, the funding is not for you.
4. Apply wisely with a good distribution of realistic universities as per and below your perceieved ability.

This is a very frequently asked question at app2us.com. Why a post for Indian students? 2 reasons: A. Indian students form a sizable number of student population at the us universities. B. A high number of app2us.com users come from India. We will strive to write articles that benefit students from China, Korea, Japan, Germany – and any other country which accounts for high number of applicants to US universities. We understand that those looking the answer of this question are looking for any source of funding that can be used by them. It may include any open scholarship, or fellowship, or something explicitly for students from India. One blog post cannot do justice to this topic, so the contents here are by no means exhaustive.

US Government / USIEF Scholarships for Indians:

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), the Fulbright Commission in India, offers fellowships and scholarships open to Indian citizens for 2010-2011. In addition to providing opportunities for personal, academic and professional growth, Fulbright-Nehru and other exchanges promote mutual understanding between the people of the US and India. India and USA signed a historic new Fulbright agreement on July 4, 2008, increasing India’s contributions to the program and thus the fellowships are now known as Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships. Some of the scholarships and fellowships that support degree-seeking students from India are:

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships for Leadership Development
International Fulbright Science and Technology Award
International Fellowships Program (Ford Foundation Graduate Fellowships)
East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship Program

If you live in or around Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai or New Delhi, we encourage you to visit USIEF. More information can be found here.

BPCL Scholarship:
BPCL is India’s leading oil company. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited awards scholarships to students who have demonstrated all around brilliance and have a passion to achieve excellence in their chosen field. BPCL scholars are a group of Indian students who seek assistance from BPCL. There are age restrictions, and it is only for Masters degree (not for PhD). When contacted by app2us.com, Chidambareshwaran Raman, a 2004 BPCL scholar, said, “BPCL Scholarship helped me gain confidence to pursue my higher studies without worrying about financial support. I would encourage students to apply for all the
scholarships available for higher studies. A Scholarship is a recognition for your hard work through the years and an investment made in you for the good you are going to do for the society.”

More information about BPCL scholarships can be found at:
http://www.bharatpetroleum.com/scholarship/scholarship.asp

The Paul Foundation Scholarship:
The Paul foundation scholarships are suspended for 2009. When operational, these are given for Masters and PhD degrees. They do not seem to favorably consider supporting the study of management, medicine or engineering, so applicants from Science and Humanities background have a better chance.

More information can be found here.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship:

The scholarship pays upto US Dollars 25000 to study abroad. The best feature of this scholarship is that there is no restriction on what you have to study. A key requirement is that you fluently speak the language of your target country, Indian students need to prove they have good verbal skills including that of spoken English.

More information can be found here:

There are some loan scholarships, which are not as beneficial as above scholarships but may help some applicants:
Sahu Jain trust of The Times of India group announced its 2009-2010 need-cum-merit based educational scholarships. There are two scholarship categories, inland scholarships and overseas loan scholarships. The overseas loan scholarships are strictly for technical subjects to be undertaken by graduates/ post graduates. If the number of zeroes in the announcement is correct, then the loan amount is Indian Rupees 100,000 or approximately US dollars 2,000. That will not cover the fees for one semester at most US universities and not even cover one course at Stanford. However if you are anyway considering a loan at the interest rate of 10% or more, then another interest free loan does not hurt. Moreover it will look somewhat good on your resume.

The Last date for obtaining the application forms is very close – May 20th, 2009. We recently found this loan scholarship program. It sounds somewhat interesting at the same time raises some red flags.

According to the foundation website, “The objective of the Scholarship Program is to evolve a group of young professionals and leaders of higher caliber imbued with values of entrepreneurship and ethics. This program therefore goes beyond financial support and has a unique aspect – a mentoring program to nurture and motivate scholars.”

The deadline is February 20th 2009. It is open for Indian nationals below the age of 30. The Foundation awards interest free loan scholarships to Indian students with a consistently good academic record. The amount of scholarship, up to a maximum of Rs. Ten Lacs. (Indian Rupees 1 million, approx USD 20k).

Who is Narotam, Sekhsaria? Apparently the promoter of Gujrat Ambuja Cements, and one of the richest Indians. That should make is foundation/loan scholarship somewhat credible. However we are highly concerned that there is a application fee of Rs. 300. As a rule of thumb, any scholarship worldwide where the applicant is required to pay a fee should be scrutinized carefully before applying for it. But this is a loan – so you may treat it as a loan processing fee.

We did some simple calculations to put the Rs. 300 application fee in perspective. Loan is payable in 4 years. Assuming an interest rate of 10%, for a loan of Rs. 1 million, the total interest amount would be approx. Rs. 217,400. State Bank of India charges simple interest on a daily reducing basis, so the actual interest for this amount may be less. Now let us divide this amount by Rs. 300 and round up, and we get 725. This means that if the scheme attracts more than 725 applicants per loan scholarship, then this is a profitable proposition, else charitable proposition. [Assuming every scholarship-loan is for the maximum amount]

Another problem is that the “Scholars will have to take an insurance policy and assign it to the Foundation.” The insurance policy may be of an amount far exceeding the loan amount. We have not seen a case where you buy a home or car on loan and you are expected to sign off your life insurance to the creditor. In the sad event of the death of the person who took the loan, it is a loss to the creditor and that is how normally things work. The insurance amount still goes to immediate family members/next of kin.

However, due to a reputable name behind this scholarship, and its office at Nariman Point, Mumbai, we hope that it is a good option for those seeking an interest free loan. May be there is some good reason behind the application fee. One should make sure that the insurance amount over and above the outstanding loan amount should still be paid to the family, not to this foundation.

Applicants to US universities like to explore and exhaust every potential source of funding. With drying up of fellowships and scholarships, students explore education loans offered in their home countries and in USA. Very few loans are available to international students.

Almost all personal loans in USA are tracked via credit reports. Each individual has a unique social security number and a credit file. These credit files are maintained by 3 agencies, transunion, experion and Equifax. Those with bad history of repayment or excessive debt may not get loans. Even in case of US citizens, those with no credit history have a tough time getting any loan. Obviously, international students have no credit file or history, so most banks do not consider them for loans. Some US based financial institutions do offer loans to international students IF they provide a co-signer who is a US citizen or resident. Some admission offers are accompanied with such letters which indicate that loans are available if you have a US co-signer. Students get all excited since they ‘know’ someone in USA they will ask them to co-sign a loan, even to casual acquaintances like college senior, someone from the same hometown, a distant cousin etc etc.

Now this brings us to the focus of our post – what it means to be a co-signer of a loan? Well, for all practical purposes, it is a loan taken by the co-signer. If you are asking your US based uncle ‘just to sign’ a loan, you are actually asking him to take a loan for you, where you will enjoy the benefits and he will suffer all the consequences. Now what can be a disadvantage to a US resident for simply co-signing a loan? A lot. First and foremost, that person is solely responsible to payback the loan, as you anyway do not have a credit history. When a person takes a loan, his or her credit score goes down and the amount taken shows up on the credit history – making is costlier and difficult to get any more loans in the future.

As you get some idea about the seriousness of co-signing a loan, we suggest you be very careful if you ever ask some close relative in USA to sign your loan. Also understand that they are very likely to say no, due to reasons explained in this blog post.
Private Universities have a flat fee. Public Universities offer a lower tuition fee to the residents of their own state. This lower fee is referred to as in-state tuition. Only US citizens and permanent residents who belong to that US state are eligible for in-state benefits. Residency can be acquired after living in that state for a certain amount of time, typically two years. Again international students studying on F-1 or J-1 visa cannot claim to be state residents even if they have been living there for any length of time.

The in state tuition rates are typically 30% to 50% of the out of state tuition. At some Universities international students who are working as TA/RA get to pay the in state tuition fee because they are considered to be state employees. Even the receipients of open scholarships are awarded in-state tuition. This varies from state to state. This facility is available in almost all public Universities of Texas.
