Helped by a student and a egg-donor girl, Meli, Dr. Wolper finally succeeds in the cloning process, but the events leading to this achievement create strong bonds between hims and Meli. The School of Social Science was transformed into a violent training center for simian slaves, and its courtyard became an ape auction block.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001): UCI continues to attract movie makers even in the 21st century. In the movie, the building where the crew steals the EMP device is actually the Gillespie Neuroscience Research Facility located in the College of Medicine.

In an important development related to the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal at Pennsylvania State University, the University President Dr. Graham Spanier was fired today, along with Joe Paterno, who is among the most successful football coaches ever. The Penn State board has named Dr. Rodney A. Erickson, executive vice president and provost, as the interim president of the University. Tom Bradley, assistant coach, has been named interim head football coach.

The Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal is a child sexual abuse scandal involving allegations against former Pennsylvania State University football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and allegations of a university coverup of those incidents. Sandusky, a longtime defensive coordinator under head coach Joe Paterno, retired in 1999 but retained access to Penn State’s athletic facilities. A 2011 grand jury investigation reported that Mike McQueary, then a graduate assistant, told Paterno in 2002 that he had seen Sandusky performing a sex act on a 10-year-old boy in Penn State football’s shower facilities. Paterno then reported the allegations to Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. In November 2011, Sandusky was arrested on 40 counts of molesting eight young boys over a 15-year period. In addition, Curley and university Senior Vice President Gary Schultz resigned after being charged with failing to report the incident to police and lying to a grand jury regarding what they knew about the incident. Paterno and University President Graham Spanier were not charged, but both received criticism for their handling of the allegations. Earlier today, Paterno announced he would retire at the end of the season, but hours later, Paterno and Spanier were formally removed from their positions, effective immediately, by the Penn State Board of Trustees.

After a series of cover ups and failing to uphold high moral standards, finally the board of trustees have taken a tough stand, which will hopefully lead to a safer environment at Penn State and elsewhere and set high standards of accountability. Those applying to Penn State should continue with their plans. We express solidarity with the Penn State community and with the victims of abuse.

Note: The matter is under investigation and all accused are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Dr. Spanier is not charged with a crime so far.

This is contributed by Mohit Singh of CMU. Views expressed are his own. Others are encouraged to share their experiences.

Settling Down: Like everyone else, I had my set of concerns…notions….and in some cases rumors. But, for me settling down in Pittsburgh was fun. I had few relatives in this city so that temporary accomdation stuff was taken care of.. But the Indian Graduate Student Association arranged the temporary accomodation (which included Airport pickup also) for the us new students. So, I dont think anyone among us faced any sort of difficulty. Since I arrived in Pittsburgh quite early, I was able to participate in some fun events like river rafting etc.

Culture: American Culture is quite open and acceptable and it is nothing like hollywood movies. Most of americans doesnt like to invade in personal space of other people and expect same from you. But one will learn to say lines like “how is it going??” to “thank you” as these are the ettiquetes of people here. Here, people follow the rule of work hard and party harder. Drinking is a common and acceptable norm. Alcohol beverages are served even in some of the campus events organised here.

Studies/Research: The most common complaint here among students: workload. CMU has an impossible workload. You slack for a week and you are seen struggling for rest of the course. The first couple of weeks is fun and everything looks so good and suddenly the first assignment is due and you have so much work to catch up… So, one has to start studying from day1.

Research: It is somethng which is quite subjective. What I have seen is untill one is not paid by a professor, he/she doesnt expect you to work or contribute. But if you take your research seriously, then be assured that you will be challenging yourself with soemthing which is latest and new…And if you get a stipend or waiver then nothing beats that deal. Otherwise, there is a genre of students who dont do anything in their research.

About CMU: CMU has a large stress on interdiscplinary.. For most of the departments, you are not pre-registered for any subjects. So you can register yourself for any course from any department. Arts, Architecture, Sports…Computer Science..any course. I have enrolled in courses ranging from Advance Tennis, Digital Photography to courses like Machine Learning….So one is compltely free to decide their curriculum. The professors here are walking encyclopedias. Everyone pioneering in their fields.. It feels blessed to be their students.
Search for internship: Internship search can be pretty frustating at times. As it is in no way less challenging than searching for a job. But in US, the contacts and social interaction matters. I was fortunate to get intern offers from places around the globe. It pays well if your advisor is a hot-shot. You can always ask your advisor for contacts. But in the end, it is “you” who have to be alert and look around. Even if you are a department topper… from CMU or any other university.. if you are not active and alert.. no one will bother.

Food/Cooking: thats one thing which I wished that I would have listened to my mom. I am a vegetarian so it turns out that options for me are bit limited.. I mostly eat out though…. There are block indian meals at the campus itself..which is as cheap as like 6 bucks.. then you have subways.. but I think for vegetarian best bet is to look for mexican cuisine. I am simply gaga over the chipotle burritoes. Other than that, Ready to Eat stuff..(costs like 1.5 dollars per pack) is good.. but it is not very healthy and after a while you wil get bore of it. The last resort is cooking… People usually cook in bulk (like cook for as much as for a week stuff).

General Advice: American Education is much more than the classroom education. It makes you confident.. adds an extra dimension of “globalness” in your thinking. The waste of this education will be just to limit yourself in books. Thats a waste.. but look around.. participate… integrate with other cultures… and remember, you are representing your country in front of world. Learn to spend that extra buck wherever it is necessary and learn to save that extra buck where it is a waste. I have seen students buying i-phones or ipods in the very first semester and then saving on books or squeezing in an extra person in their houses to save on rent. Watch what you say..as some of us new students can be very racists even though we dont realize it.. and Racism is pretty serious offense over here.
Wish you all the best and hope you are encouraged to apply and eventually study in US.
What do most incoming students do after getting the visa? They celebrate, they book tickets, do shopping and packing. And they day dream about the bright future that lies ahead. As the readers of app2us.com you should definitely do all that. But you can do much more that will keep you way ahead of other folks when you land in the USA.

Activate University Email: On the basis of the student ID number provided with the admission offer, try to activate your university email ID. You may have to contact the University computer center/helpdesk for this.

Email some Professors: Now that you have the university email, the chances of getting a reply from a professor have increased manifold. However use caution and send meaningful emails only. Read this for details: “How to Email Professors”.

Compile medical records: Compile your immunization record as per the expectation and format of your university. Getting some of the preventive immunization in your own country will save you time and money. If you never got your blood group tested, now is a good time. Make sure you carry a record of all immunization you get.

Register for classes: Register for classes that you are most interested in. Some classes fill so fast that by the time you land, the interesting classes or those offered by coolest professors may be all taken. Some universities impose restrictions on registration by new students, particularly to enforce that students provide their immunization record. If that is the case, you can proactively fax your immunization records, and request the university health center to get the registration blocks removed.

Learn to type: Whether or not your major is related to computers, learning typing will help find a student worker job. Some student worker positions specifically ask for the typing speed, so it is important to be able to type at a good speed.

Learn Computer skills: Again, whether or not your major is related to computers, some basic computing skills are useful in all fields of studies. If you know programming or can develop web pages you will have a much better chance of getting a student worker job or out of department assistantship.

Learn to drive: Learning to drive can be very expensive in the US. If you learn and practice in your hometown, you will be prepared as and when you need to drive in the US.

Get a driver’s license: If you plan to drive in USA, get a driving license. If you have no plans to drive in USA, get a driving license. Here is why. “Get a Driving License Now – Save dollars later”.

Get a International driving permit: On the basis of your local driving license, you can get a IDP – International Driving Permit. This is generally valid for one year.

Buy Books: Books are very expensive in the US. Look up the department website for various courses and syllabi and try to carry required books with you. Carrying books with you is neither illegal nor unethical, as long as it is for your own use. So write your name on the books so that the customs does not consider those as new books. Do not sell your books once you are in USA, because that might be illegal.

Linkup with fellow incoming students: Look for various online groups and mailing lists of incoming students for your university. You can find many from your city. In many cases students meet and sync up for group booking of air tickets etc. Read: “How to book the air ticket to the USA”

Contact the student association(s): Contact the student association of your own country in your target University. For example, if you are an Indian, you may contact the Indian Student Association for a ride from airport to the university and initial help. If you are from a small country with very few students, you can still contact the international student association or the student association of another country for help.

My mind is full of mixed feelings while I write this article on the day of my graduation commencement ceremony, which is Stanford’s 118th commencement. A year has passed so quickly but I still vividly remember the first day at campus, arrived here as a curious visitor new to US system. Now I see my life and the world around with a whole perspective, this is what Stanford has given me. Past year has taught me more things and given unique experience which could not be even compared to previous 10 years of my life. It was a full action packed roller-coaster ride, once you are on board there is no turning back.

A typical day started with morning class at 8 am followed by further classes, seminars, assignments, papers, group meetings, project work etc. and lasts till 7 or 8 pm with a squeezed in lunch break somewhere in between. For stress reliving I usually went to the gym or surfed the net and again back to work. Getting an internship during tough markets like these is a big challenge and same is true for me (although most people said me that, you are from Stanford and need not worry). I applied to numerous places, got few interview calls but none turned out to be fruitful. I felt dejected and thought, what good is this Masters degree if, it cannot even fetch me a summer internship and thus almost made my mind to go back to India for this summer. But during the third quarter just one month before the beginning of the internship, I received an email from my one of my professor about an intern position at a company in Washington D.C.; I applied to the firm and got a telephonic interview call, which eventually turned into my favor. The story does not end here, the twist is that, I had already given the interview for another very big construction company in the Bay area a month ago and was waiting for their reply. The day I got to know about my acceptance as a VDC (virtual design and construction) engineer in the D.C. firm, an approval email for internship from Bay area construction company also came. This for me was one of the biggest dilemmas of my life- to choose between two very good choices. I ultimately chose to go to D.C. (due to multiple reasons) and explore the east coast.

With three quarters finished and only one more to go, I wish, I had some more time. Some of my close friends suggest maybe I should stay longer and do a PhD. I truly feel obliged and honored being a part of Stanford community. I would like to thank my parents, friends and relatives for being the supporting pillar in all the ups and downs during this wonderful journey.

(article contributed by our user, Ravi Kumar Assudani of Stanford)

9/11: My first day in the USA

Full of enthusiasm and hope we (me and my would-be roommate Kushagra) landed at the San Francisco International airport. Walking at the airport, I had all sorts of thoughts crossing my mind that how this new chapter of life was going to be. Escaping from the customs with bags full of pickles and Indian spices, we walked out of the airport and were received by students of Stanford University.

9/12: The journey begins

Last night when I entered the campus it was all dark and I really couldn’t appreciate its scenic beauty. On my first morning in US as I removed the curtains of my room the view of the campus was mind blowing. I had a good sleep as opposed to most of the other people who were affected by jet lag. We were handed with some booklets when we took the keys for our room including information about apartments, time schedules of upcoming events and tips to settle down at campus. All these had lots and lots of information and I always wonder if anyone ever reads those. In the evening we went for a walk exploring the campus and appreciating the greenery. The weather was good but still it felt cold in the evening, we were both wearing woolens while on the other hand many girls there were moving in small shorts. Though it was good for us but made us feel even colder.

9/13: The Pan IIT picnic at Fremont

Thanks to Kushagra’s senior who got us tickets to Pan IIT picnic, an event when all the IIT alumni of the Silicon Valley get together. We drove all the way crossing a really long bridge at 100 kmph crossing the bay. I have heard it takes a while for IIT guys in States to get to attend major alumni events, we were lucky to get this chance in 3 days. The meet was simply amazing and it felt as a welcome party for us. It gave us a chance to meet our seniors and from other IITs and get an overview of our life after Stanford. There were people who graduate 2 years ago to people who gradated 30 years ago and we two were the only students who didn’t even started their graduate studies. Along with all this there was football, volleyball and above all lots of food and drinks!

9/14: Food Food Food… its all free!!

The first orientation we attended was Stanford Indian Association (popularly known as SIA) orientation. Along with answering all our questions regarding mobile connections, bikes (actually cycles), stores etc. it gave us a great chance to meet all the Indians at Stanford. As usual we were again handed lots of informative booklets. That night was fun, we made many new friends and above all had good food and it’s all free. Stanford is well known for its generosity regarding free food and above all it gives you a break from cooking.

9/15 Job hunt starts

I realized after meeting fellow Indians at the SIA get together that I was one of the rare peoples in Mechanical without any funding. By this time I had interacted with many seniors too who gave all sorts of fundas regarding funding possibilities. I started applying for possible assistantships to profs, by mailing them, calling them or even meeting them in person. I went from call centers to library to stores and started applying. Time passed away really quickly in attending different orientations, looking for jobs, etc.

9/16 International Students get together… free food again!!

This was a great place where we met lots and lots of international batch mates. We made many new friends but as usual the most exciting thing was again the free food. There were lots of things to eat but alas my bad luck… being a vegetarian I had very few options. In fact there was just one vegetable that too went over before my number came. So it was like everyone was having 2-3 varieties of non-veg. and I was feeding on chapaties, some cheese and salad. After that we all went to Palo Alto downtown around half hour from campus for our first Grad night out. We went to some really good pubs but again my good habits made me cry, when everyone was holding wine glasses I was staring at them with cold coffee in my hand. Anyways it was our first night out in US and it was really fun.

9/17 Asha – Giving back to India

This was my best day at Stanford so far. There was an event organized by a non-profitable organization called Asha’s Stanford division. It was a tracking event on one of the hills in Stanford. Lots of Indian people gathered and climbed up the hill chattering all the way. The view from the top of the hill was enthralling. After our return was the food party and we had our best meal ever! Most importantly it was Indian dinner that too all vegetarian.

The first week was full of meeting people, making new friends, appreciating all sorts of beauties, collecting booklets and enjoying tons of free food. First week was simply great and I expect it moves the same way for my entire stay.

This post is about the bicycle which is referred to as ‘bike’ in the USA.

After you land in USA and settle down in your apartment, one of the first things to buy is a bike. You may buy a new bike in less than $ 100 at a Wal-Mart or Target store. Do not go to shops that sell only bikes those are very expensive.

You may also buy used bikes for $10 or $20 but remember that repairs can be very expensive – many times more than the cost of a new bike. So investing in a new bike is a good idea. You must buy three accessories with your bike – A helmet, a set of front and rear lights and a lock.

The helmet will save you from serious head injury, the light will save you from a serious traffic violation ticket (fine) and the lock will obviously save your bike from being stolen.

It is mandatory in most states to have the lights on after sunset. All traffic rules apply to the bikes. A cyclist must stop at all STOP signs. Fines may range from 50 to 300 dollars.
Students go to US Universities for different reasons. Good Education, opportunities, dollar dreams are few of the common reasons. However, experiencing the diverse culture of US is one of the best opportunities one must utilize.

International students often neglect the opportunity and tend to spend all their time not only with people from same country but even within sub cultures from within a country. The other day someone posted a question on our forum about which University has good number of students speaking a particular Indian regional language!

There is no fun in traveling half the world if you still with people from your own village!! While it is really important for a Korean to find a supportive group of Korean students and for a Turkish student to be able find a Turkish roommate, all students should make a conscious effort to make friendships across cultural boundaries.

When students are asked to form groups for academic projects, it is a good idea to make diverse group. You learn the work ethics and styles of people from different backgrounds which will help in your future career.
